In demanding hospitality environments, the stability of glasses carried on a tray is an important part of safe and efficient service.

Even small amounts of water, drink residue or other liquids can change the friction conditions between the base of a glass and the carrying surface. On a completely smooth tray, this may increase the tendency of items to move when the tray is tilted, accelerated or suddenly stopped.

An appropriately designed surface can help reduce this risk. Non-slip serving trays are intended to improve the stability of glasses and other vessels during handling, particularly in busy bars, restaurants and event environments.
How Is a Bar Tray with a Non-Slip Surface Made?
The functional surface of a tray starts at the product and tooling design stage.
Injection-moulded parts can be given a defined surface structure by modifying the mould cavity. Depending on the required finish, toolmakers may use methods such as:
EDM machining – used to create controlled textures on tool steel,
chemical texturing – used to obtain repeatable grain or matte finishes,
mechanical texturing or blasting – suitable for selected types of surface finish.
These methods can reproduce fine patterns on the plastic part during moulding.
The resulting texture may take the form of a fine grain, dots, grooves or other structures selected according to the required appearance and function.
Challenges in Injection Mould Design
Tool designers need to balance the desired texture with manufacturability.
A very deep or aggressive texture can increase friction between the mould surface and the finished part during ejection.
For this reason, draft angles, texture depth and the direction of part release must be considered together.
A correctly designed surface should allow the product to be removed from the mould without damaging either the geometry or the intended finish.
This is particularly important in large-volume production, where small design problems can become significant when repeated over thousands of cycles.
How Does the Injection Process Affect the Final Surface?
During injection moulding, molten polymer fills the cavity and reproduces the geometry and surface finish of the tool.
The quality of that reproduction depends on several process parameters, including:
melt temperature,
mould temperature,
injection pressure,
holding pressure,
filling speed,
cooling conditions.
A textured mould surface can therefore be transferred directly to the plastic part, provided that the process is correctly controlled.
However, surface texture alone does not determine the complete anti-slip performance of a tray.
The friction between a glass and a tray also depends on the materials in contact, the presence of liquids, the load and the geometry of the functional surface.
Materials and Flexible Anti-Slip Surfaces in Wet Service
Rigid plastics such as polystyrene can provide the structural body of a serving tray, but additional materials may be used when higher grip is required.
NOEX offers tray models made from polystyrene combined with PU or TPE anti-slip surfaces.
PU and TPE are softer than the rigid tray body and can provide different surface behaviour under load.
A compliant surface can deform slightly under the base of a glass, increasing the area of contact and helping to improve grip.
The actual result depends on:
material hardness,
surface pattern,
glass geometry,
applied load,
presence of water or other liquids.
For professional hospitality applications, non-slip trays can therefore combine a rigid supporting structure with a functional surface designed to reduce unwanted movement of glasses and drinks.
NOEX itself describes non-slip trays as products intended to minimise the risk of glasses sliding and drinks being spilled during bar and restaurant service.
Why Does Wet Service Require a Different Surface Design?
Water and other liquids can significantly alter the friction conditions between two surfaces.
A thin liquid layer may reduce direct contact between a smooth glass base and a smooth rigid tray.
For this reason, a surface intended for wet service should not be assessed exclusively under dry laboratory conditions.
The design should take into account:
the type of liquid likely to be present,
the geometry of the glass base,
the load placed on the tray,
the hardness of the anti-slip layer,
the expected angle and speed of movement.
A soft anti-slip material can help maintain more effective contact with the vessel than a completely smooth, rigid surface.
It would nevertheless be incorrect to claim that any texture or elastomer completely eliminates slipping. The purpose is to reduce the risk and improve stability under the intended conditions of use.
How Important Is Process Repeatability?
In large-volume production, a functional surface must be reproduced consistently across the entire batch.
Differences in mould temperature, pressure or material processing conditions can affect:
surface reproduction,
dimensional accuracy,
appearance,
bonding between different materials where applicable.
For this reason, the anti-slip function is not determined only by the initial product design. It also depends on stable moulding conditions and consistent material properties.
NOEX manufactures plastic products using injection moulding and operates its own tool room, allowing product design, mould manufacture and serial production to be coordinated within one production process.
The company offers different tray formats, including rectangular and round products, as well as variants using PU and TPE anti-slip surfaces.
How Should Non-Slip Trays Be Maintained?
The anti-slip surface should be treated according to the instructions provided for the particular product.
For NOEX trays covered by the manufacturer’s usage instructions, cleaning should be carried out:
with water at a temperature not exceeding 35°C,
without detergents or other chemical agents,
without abrasive scrubbing,
using soft materials that will not damage the surface.
The manufacturer also states that these trays should not be exposed to extreme temperatures or external weather conditions.
This is important because inappropriate cleaning may alter the surface and reduce its functional properties over time.
Where Are Non-Slip Trays Used?
Non-slip serving trays are primarily used in environments where drinks and glassware are moved frequently, including:
bars,
restaurants,
pubs,
catering services,
events and promotional activities.
In these applications, stability is important not only for comfort but also for reducing the risk of spills and broken glass.
The non-slip trays offered by NOEX are available in different shapes and sizes and can also serve as promotional products carrying customised branding.
Noex combines the production of advertising products with injection moulding, tooling and product development. This allows the tray body, surface solution and manufacturing process to be adapted to the requirements of a particular project.
Key Points About Grip and Surface Design in Non-Slip Trays
A textured surface can influence friction, but the result depends on both the tray material and the object placed on it.
Mould texturing methods such as EDM or chemical texturing can reproduce controlled surface patterns in injection-moulded parts.
NOEX uses solutions based on polystyrene combined with PU or TPE anti-slip surfaces in selected tray models.
Flexible anti-slip materials can increase the effective contact area under a glass and improve stability.
Stable injection moulding parameters are important for reproducing the intended surface consistently.
Cleaning and maintenance should follow the manufacturer’s instructions to avoid damaging the functional surface.
